Pet Donor Program
In order to be part of Small Animal Veterinary Services Blood Donor Program your pet’s blood type needs to be identified. We do this with a quick blood test. If your pet’s blood is compatible with the program guidelines he/she will be placed on the donor list. When a patient is in need of a blood transfusion, S.A.V.E.S. staff starts contacting donors on the list. If your pet is available, we would ask you to come down to the hospital immediately for a donation.
When your pet arrives for the donation, the doctor will give him a touch of a sedative to help him relax. A jugular catheter is placed and the blood donation is collected. The process typically takes about 15 minutes. Afterwards we recommend that your pet be kept from lively exercise for a few days, the same thing you would be told if you had donated blood.
